Song information

„Bogurodzica - Mother of God" is the oldest recorded Polish religious hymn and the oldest preserved Polish poetic text. The work was written in the Middle Ages, probably at the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The first written record of the text is late because dating from the early fifteenth century. Earlier written records could be lost, but the text could circulate in oral form. "Mother of God" performed - according to contemporary concepts - the role of the national anthem. Mother of God in its original form includes two stanzas. The first is directed to the Virgin Mary, and the second to Jesus. It is a rhythmic work for singing. It was set to existing at the time, well-known in the West melody of the chivalry love song type. The melody was written by Benedictines, and from their monastery in St. Gallen in the Alps it spread to Poland. The melody and text are probably an altered version of pre-Slavic religious chant. The author of the Christian "Mother of God" remains unknown.
