Song information

According to legend, lyrics written by José Fernández in 1929, refer to a woman from Guantánamo, with whom he had an affair and she ultimately left him. Sometimes Fernandez added that, contrary to himself who greatly cared about her, the woman did not show much interest in his feelings. Another version of the story says that one day, spending time at the radio station, he noticed a beautiful woman with whom he fell in love at first sight. An inspiration to describe his feelings was also the mockery of his colleagues and ignorance on the part of the beautiful stranger. There are several versions of the song, but each has a similar character, referring to unrequited love. Leaving aside the historical complexities, it is one of the most famous songs from Cuba, often regarded as the most important patriotic song of the island. The song reached 9th place on the US Billboard Hot 100 The melody of the chorus is still well known all around the world.
