Song information

Glissando over the black keys is the hallmark of “I Don't Like Mondays”. The song topped UK Singles Chart (and stayed there for almost a month), but was not nearly as successful in the US. The piece, despite its seemingly 'light' melody, refers to the tragedy that took place in San Diego on January 29, 1979. That day sixteen-year-old Brenda Spencer took her rifle and opened fire against children at the local primary school, killing two people and wounding another nine. The murder weapon was Ruger 10/22 which she got as a gift from her father. After being arrested she allegedly explained that she commited the crime because... she doesn't like Mondays.

Trivia

The producer recording “Sweet Child O’ Mine” with Guns n’ Roses suggested there be a breakdown at the end of the song. The band had no idea where to take the song, resulting in the iconic repetition of “Where do we go now?”
